My poooor little sweetbunny.
I often hear him drinking out of his water bottle during the night. One night it sounded a little different. It wasn't the bottle itself that sounded different it was ... his enthusiasm... how fast he was drinking maybe. Hard to describe because it was just a subtle difference. So in the morning I looked at his water bottle and it was half full so I figured I was imagining things and I went off to work.
That evening while I was cooking dinner I heard it again and went to investigate. It was still half full so I touched the little metal ball and it was DRY!! I tapped it a few times and nothing came out. I couldn't beleive it. I took it to the sink and dumped out the water, refilled it and gave it a little squeeze and it was fine. Poor Bunny drank from it for like 10 minutes straight and nearly emptied it in the next 8 hours!
That was a few weeks ago and now I'm paranoid. I check it every day and often squeeze it just to be sure. Good thing I do because sometimes it dry again.
Do these things wear out over time (it's about 9 months old)? It's LIXIT brand, are there better, more releiable brands out there? (BTW my b-friend also has a LIXIT brand and it leaks constantly).

Re: Faulty Water Bottle
Thu, February 15, 2007 - 9:27 PMThe very same thing happened to one of my bunnies. its like the water bottle gets a "vapor lock" sometimes, when you re-fill it. He went all day once with no water! Thank god we caught it in time. Now I'm so paranoid, I reach in every day and tap all my bunny's spouts every day, just to make sure.
If its not one thing its another! -

Re: Faulty Water Bottle
Sun, February 18, 2007 - 5:34 PMI've had a bottle get stuck when a bit of litter got into the spout. I haven't had many problems with the bottles made by Hagen, but the Flat-Back kind (with the floating duck to see the water level) tended to be leaky.
That said....Given a choice, my rabbits prefer drinking from a bowl. So I eventually abandon the bottle altogether. I keep two large bowls out for them, and clean them often. I've also noticed that once the bowl is half empty, they drink less...maybe it's not as easy to get the last bit out, so I try to keep them topped up all the time.

Re: Faulty Water Bottle
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 4:25 PMMy bun's water bottle is constantly leaking until a vaccuum is formed but he won't drink from a drip-proof bottle. Instead, I've hanged one of those little troughs used in bird cages for seed under the bottle so it drips in there--he drinks from both spots now and it keeps the water from pooling and getting gross on the bottom of his cage during the day. It also saves paper towels and me having to constantly wipe up the drips. -
